POST-OP CARE FOR ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

Humans aren't the only ones who sometimes need orthopedic care. If your dog needs orthopedic surgery, you must provide the right post-operation care so she can heal properly. A lot of dog owners aren't sure how to take care of their four-legged family members after this kind of surgery. If that sounds like you, don't worry. Our team of Augusta veterinarians here at Westside Animal Hospital can help.

POST-OP CARE FOR ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

Confine Your Dog After Anesthesia

Before your dog's orthopedic surgery, the vet will give him anesthesia, and he'll probably feel the effects for a day or two after the procedure. He may seem groggy and confused for a little while. However, some particularly adventurous dogs may still want to explore and get into trouble, even with the anesthetic in their system. Keep your dog confined to a small room where he can rest comfortably, and check on him frequently. Also, keep in mind that anesthesia can cause vomiting. Some water should be fine, but avoid giving your dog food until the vet says it's okay.

Have Patience

Orthopedic vet care is a long-term journey, so have patience with your dog after the orthopedic surgery. The healing process can take several weeks, though healing time may vary by breed, size, and the extent of the surgery. During this time, limit your dog's exercise. Stretching the limbs is usually good, but your dog shouldn't break into a full run just yet. For now, just stick with short walks so your dog can relieve himself.

Schedule a Follow-Up Appointment

Your dog will still need some orthopedic vet care after her surgery. Your vet may want you to schedule a follow-up appointment to see how your dog has progressed. Sometimes, a vet will conduct x-rays to make sure that the bones are healing properly.

Keep Up with Medications

Your dog's vet will probably prescribe antibiotics and pain medication. You must keep up with these medications. They'll help minimize your dog's pain and ensure a smooth healing process. Set alarms or use a chart to remember medication times. When you give your dog her medicine, use this time to keep an eye on her incision. If the incision shows signs of infection, call the vet.
